Habemus Episcopum Novum!

In a moment of profound significance for the Church, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV today announced the appointment of Rev. Fr. Gerardo F. Saco Jr. as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

The announcement coincides with the celebration of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord - a feast that commemorates the Incarnation of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary’s faithful “yes” to God’s will.

Fr. Saco, who currently serves as Diocesan Administrator, becomes the 8th Bishop of Tagbilaran, succeeding Alberto Uy (Bishop Abet Uy).

His appointment underscores continuity in leadership, as he has guided the diocese during the period of sede vacante. Widely regarded for his pastoral zeal, humility, and sound administrative leadership, Fr. Saco has earned the trust and respect of clergy, religious, and lay faithful throughout the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

The timing of the announcement on the Solemnity of the Annunciation carries deep spiritual significance, highlighting themes of vocation, obedience, and openness to God’s will - virtues essential to episcopal ministry as a successor of the Apostles.

The Diocese of Tagbilaran now looks forward with renewed hope as it prepares to welcome its new shepherd.

Further details regarding Bishop-elect Saco’s episcopal ordination and installation are expected to be announced in the coming days.

As the Church rejoices in this development, the faithful are encouraged to pray for Bishop-elect Saco - that, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, he may respond generously to God’s call and faithfully shepherd the flock entrusted to his care.

St Joseph, Husband of Mary

Solemnity; March 19

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of St Joseph, the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. Among the saints in the Bible, Saint Joseph is one who has no recorded speech nor writing, and little is known about him. Yet by his profound trust and obedience to God, the salvation of the world came to be.

She said YES!

Today, March 25, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation. We read in Lk 1:26-38 the Archangel Gabriel’s visit to Virgin Mary, announcing she would conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of God. This is a decisive event when God revealed his plan of salvation. But God in his great love and respect for each one requires the free, not forced, consent of the person selected for the mission. And Mary said YES!

The feast serves as a moment to reflect on the mystery of the Word becoming flesh (incarnation) and to emulate Mary's complete trust in God's will. Her humble acceptance (fiat) is our model of faith and obedience. May each of us also respond to God’s call "Let it be done to me according to your word."
